Time Management Required

I’ve been spending a lot of time lately wondering how to make better use of my time.

I’m definitely what you would call a “night owl” - I can do early mornings, but I work much better after supper - usually between 8pm and 12-1am. But how am I using those hours, and more importantly, can I make better use of them?

I tend to have an ongoing “to do” list, and I’m always working through that during these hours. But it’s a very spontaneous thing - if I think of a blog post, I’ll write it on the list. That’s fine, but there’s no real structure to the content working like that.

There was a great post over on Daily Blog Tips the other day about how to write better blog posts, and 2 of the points really got me thinking.

The first was brainstorming. Rather than coming up with posts “when you need to”, you should set aside time to come up with as many ideas as possible. That seems to make sense. You can seperate the good from the bad, and get more of a structure to your writing.

The second thing is a Posting Schedule. Once you’ve got a bunch of ideas you want to make into posts, planning when they are gonna be released gives your mind a break. If you know you’ve got content lined up for the next couple of weeks, it takes the pressure off.

I’m already putting this point into action by writing this post 5 days before I’ll release it.

With regards to the brainstorming… I’ve currently got 4 blogs. My plan is to try and set aside Sundays as brainstorming days, and work on a different blog each week. That should at least give me the ideas, if not the posts. If I can build up a regular pattern to the way I work, I’m sure I’ll be a lot more relaxed about my workload.

Of course, I’ll still keep that notebook handy for those moments of unexpected inspiration!
