DNS will be the death of me
Well, I hope not, obviously… I hope it’s ravenous sex with a beautiful woman when I’m about 70, but you get the idea.
I’ve just spent the last god knows how long trying to sort out the nameservers for my new dedicated server. See, it worked… but not a lot.
I’d got the server working, and some domains moved by means of direct DNS pointing in 123-reg, but I knew I should just be able to change nameservers. Everytime I tried to do that, I got an error saying that melody (one of the nameservers) didn’t exist in the registry.
After several long and fruitless calls to 123-reg tech support, in which I was given various levels of useless info (we’ve created them for you - a lie, the ip addresses are the wrong way round - also a lie cos they still weren’t created), I FINALLY got somewhere.
Having rang them again this morning, I was told that the domain the nameservers are on “needs to point at its own nameservers”. So in effect you change the nameservers for mydomain.com to ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com. He said 1&1 should have told me that when I did it. Heh.
Anyway, it didn’t seem to be a complete solution, until Dave (my good friend from A2Z Computing in Wales) mentioned the Nameserver setup page in the 123-reg control panel.
Embarrasment aside (how did I miss that link?), I’m pleased to report that once I found that I was able to add the nameservers, set the domain to point to itself, and test moving domains in 123-reg to the new nameservers. Which works perfectly!
Great news! I can now start moving all my domains and client domains over to the new server, get rid of my DreamHost and M6.net accounts, and get organised.
Dave - I owe you several pints of your favourite alcoholic beverage!
I should also give a shout out to Mark and Bill who have also given me ideas and advice regarding this issue - thanks guys!

Hey Dan,
What made you opt for your own server? Traffic? Security? It is something I have been thinking about for a while. Every month I get close to my max with Hostgator and I am waiting for the day they shut me down so I am trying to be proactive and plan ahead.
I do think I will opt for some type of VPS as I would much rather write than upgrade cmos!
Good luck on the new site!
Robert
